Location The Cuban
archipelago is made up of the Isle of Cuba, the Isle of Youth
and around 4,195 keys and islets. It is located in the
Caribbean Sea, next to the Tropic of Cancer and right at the
entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, between North and South
America. Cuba is 140 Km from the Bahamas, 180 KM from Florida,
210 Km from Cancun, Mexico and 146 Km Jamaica.
Area and Population Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean
with 110,922 sq. Km in area. It has a population of 10,800,000
inhabitants with over 3 million people living in the city of
Havana, its Capital.
Relief The Isle of Cuba
is long and narrow, its shape resembles a crocodile. It
has a total length of 1200 Km with 5746 Km of coasts which
host 200 bays and 289 natural beaches. There are three
mountain ranges: the Sierra Maestra in the Eastern region, the
Sierra del Escambray in the center and the Sierra de los
Organos in the West.
Flora
and Fauna The Cuban flora
has more than 80,000 botanical species, more than 50% are
endemic. It has 900 species of fish, 4000 species of mollusks
and 300 bird species.
Climate Cuba
is a tropical country with an average of 330 sunny days in the
year. The mean annual temperature 25.5 degrees (C). There are
two seasons: the rainy season (May - October) and the dry
season (November - April). January is the coldest month and
July, the hottest. The dries t months are August and December.
Hurricane season is August to late October.
Language The official language is Spanish but English is
often spoken by the older and younger generation.
