Nicaragua: The next big
thing!
Nicaragua is
a largely untrodden adventure playground, undiscovered by the
crowds scared away by earthquakes, hurricanes, and its
war-ravaged past. But set up shop here and you can spend
your spare days exploring an active volcano on the island of
Ometepe, diving the Corn Islands the Caribbean coast, and
catching waves off the surf town of San Juan del Sur.
The 1979-90 Sandinista government seized millions of
acres of property, and even today many land title remain
cloudy. In spite of, and indeed because of, this bad
history, over the last few years buyers in search of bargains
arrived in droves. Europeans, liberal activists,
surfers, backpackers, and entrepreneurs from Cost Rica and
Mexico came bearing fistfuls of cash, snatching up grand
colonial-era mansions for $20,000 and plots on the Pacific
coast for $5,000.
Look around the surf town of San Juan del Sur, near Costa
Rica, or Granada, one of the most beautiful cities
in Latin America. You can still snare a beach shack,
complete with fruit trees, for around $90,000, or a two - room
house on 3.5 mango and coconut tree covered acres fro the same
amount - the land alone is worth the price.
Got a little more cash and the entrepreneurial buy? An
eight bedroom ocean-view bed and breakfast can be your for
$275,000. Check out your options and feel free to
contact me directly. -Robert Henry Walz-

Dear safari clients and
fellow travelers:
We are very fortunate to
have Mr. Adan Gaitan as Hemingway Tours and Safaris
Nicaragua and Honduras "in country" safari manager. I
not only know Adan well but have been continually
impressed by his knowledge of both country's tourism
infrastructure but have personally been the beneficiary
of his safari and tour experience. Please remember, we
only contract with resident safari and tour managers
whom we have personally met and know will provide out
clients a very rewarding travel experience.
He graduated from Law School in Nicaragua has
managed a family travel agency in Managua, Nicaragua
since 1966. He has been Nicaragua's leading hunting and
fishing expeditions guide since 1969.
His
experience includes successfully guiding and escorting
groups of sportsmen from all over the US as well as
regular sightseeing and eco tours.
Adan now
specializes in dove and duck hunting safaris as well as
Tarpon and Snook Fishing expeditions in Nicaragua, the
Caribbean coast and the San Juan River basin.
He
also specializes in Eco- Adventures in the jungles of
Nicaragua and Photo-Safaris.
Adan is also the
Director of Nicaragua's Tourism Board.
I think
you can begin to understand how fortunate I was to have
met Adan on a trip to Nicaragua last year. He is the
real "Crocodile Dundee."
Nicaragua
Located between
the waves of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the
country of Nicaragua is an intriguing land of dramatic
scenery and friendly people. Although its abundance of
waterways, volcanoes, colonial towns and tranquil
pueblos offer tourists much to explore, Nicaragua's
tumultuous recent history has left it relatively
undiscovered.
Over the past 30 years the country
has endured devastating political upheaval and natural
disasters only to emerge stronger. These hardships have,
in the past, made Nicaragua seem an undesirable and
potentially unsafe place to visit. These perceptions are
changing rapidly as I can personally attest in my seven
trip to the country in the last year. Now travelers are
learning not only how much the country has to offer but
also that it is now considered one of the safest
countries in Central and South America.
Nicaragua
today is one of the fastest growing tourist and
investment destinations in the region and offers
attractive investment incentives whether it be restoring
a colonial home, starting a business or purchasing one
of the new ocean front homes.
But Nicaragua's
greatest economic promise most likely will lie in
tourism which is already the country's second largest
source of income. The eagerness for tourism and its
almost endless ecological opportunities is the main
reason I chose to offer tour and safari excursions to
Nicaragua. The other reason is the friendliness of the
people and the ever-present feeling of safety I felt
while traveling about the
country.
Banks Banks accept
traveler's checks and major credit cards and are located
in all large cities. Visitors can obtain US dollars from
Credomatic which accepts all major credit cards or ATM
machines. Tourists should be aware that that travelers
checks can be difficult to cash outside banks.
Money-changers will exchange US dollars and several
other Central American currencies for cordobas and are
readily available on the street and are used by locals
and tourists alike.
Post
Office There are post offices called Correos
de Nicaragua in nearly every town which are open
standard business
hours.
Accommodations We use a
range of accommodations from five star hotels to luxury
resorts to remote eco and fishing lodges. All have been
previously approved by our "in country"
manager.
Restaurants Nicaragua
offers one of the widest range of restaurants serving
local and international cuisine. From dramatic cliff
side restaurants to small home restaurants situated on
one of the 600 islands in Lake Managua. We do not
include all meals in every tour package because we want
our clients to explore on their own and discover new
restaurants. The food and water is
safe!
Climate Nicaragua has two
seasons. The rainy season from May to October and the
dry season from November to April. However the season
vary from region to region. In nearly all of Nicaragua
April and May are the hottest, driest months prone to
intense dust and clouds of smoke from farmers burning
their fields in preparation
planting.
Precipitation The
rainy season traditionally starts around May 15 and is
typically marked by clear blue skies in the morning and
then clouds that gather about midday when the rains
begin to fall. The rainy season continues through
November except for a period from July 15 to August 15
when the rains cease. This period is called Indian
summer.
Temperature Nicaragua,
located between 11 and 15 degrees north latitude, is
squarely in the tropics. The climate, while generally
warm to hot, presents considerable variation from region
to region. Temperatures generally range from 81 degrees
Fahrenheit in the rainy season to 95 degrees in the dry
season. IN the mountain regions is considerably cooler
at 59 - 68 degrees
F.
Fauna Nicaragua is home to a
great deal of exotic wildlife including: Toucans,
reptiles, ocelots, parrots and macaws. There are also
176 mammal species including six species of big cats.
The country is also home to a wide variety of both
saltwater and freshwater species of fish due to the
presence of two large lakes, tow ocean coastlines and
numerous isolated volcanic crater lakes.
Because
of its location along the Central American biosphere
corridor, Nicaragua is home to 676 species of birds,
250,000 species of insects, 172 species of reptiles and
64 known species of
amphibians.
Flora Of the world's
250,000 species of flowering plants and estimated 15,000
to 17,000 are found in Central America. Nicaragua is
believed to be home to over 9,000 species many of which
are thought to be of medicinal value.
